Two people start at the same hotel on the same Monday, on almost the same money.
One carries bags. One clears breakfast plates. Three years later the first is a duty manager and the second is still clearing breakfast plates.
Nothing separated them at the interview. What did was the word printed on the first contract, and neither read it as a choice.
The One Line on Your Contract That Quietly Compounds
Hotel adverts get judged on the hourly rate. The rate is the least durable thing in them.
A hotel is not one workplace. It is six small businesses sharing a building, a payroll and a front door.
You do not get hired by the hotel. You get hired by a department, and that decides what you are doing in five years.
Six Trades Live Under One Roof and Barely Speak
Each hires differently, is measured differently, and leads somewhere different.
| DEPARTMENT | WHAT YOU ACTUALLY DO | WHERE IT LEADS |
|---|---|---|
| Front office | Check in, check out, complaints, the phone, the till | Duty manager, reservations, revenue |
| Porters and concierge | Luggage, cars, deliveries, nights, the things nobody planned | Front office, then duty manager |
| Food and beverage service | Breakfast, bar, the hotel restaurant, room service | Supervisor, then events and banqueting |
| Kitchen | Prep, section, service, cleaning down | A trade of its own, and it leaves the hotel |
| Housekeeping | Bedrooms, linen, public areas, turndown | Floor supervisor, head housekeeper |
| Maintenance | Plumbing, plant, boilers, the pool, small repairs | Maintenance manager, or any building anywhere |
Porters and food and beverage take most people with no history. Maintenance and kitchen want a trade on day one.
One Employer Priced Four Departments, and the Front Desk Came Last
An island resort in south west England advertised four live-in roles at once in September 2026. Same employer, same island, same accommodation.
The reservationist, sitting at a desk, was "From £13.00 per hour, dependent on experience".
The cleaner was "From £13.50 per hour, dependent on experience". So was the maintenance role.
The office job paid least. That is not a mistake.
Front of house is the department people want, so it never has to compete on money. The jobs nobody pictures themselves doing are the ones that have to pay.
What Hotel Work Pays in Four Currencies
There is no global hotel wage. A page printing one has averaged a Dubai beach resort with a roadside inn.
Here are real advertised figures, each in its own currency.
Two rows say Not known and both were earned. Sixteen Saudi front office adverts produced one price, and it carried a dollar sign on a Riyadh salary. A figure already converted is exactly what we may not print, so it was not used.
Europe was stranger. Sixteen Dutch hotel adverts and nine Irish ones gave one price: a full-time night porter at "€ 711 per maand", with no hours line to explain it.
The advert was re-opened and says it too. We cannot tell what it measures, so it is not in the table.
There is no safe average either. One large salary site puts a UK hotel receptionist at £25,420 a year, from 840 salaries reported, updated 3 August 2026.
Its band then runs from £25,420 to £28,115. When the average is also the floor, that is not a range. And it covers one department out of six.
The Jobs Sitting on Either Side of This One
Hotel staff move between these constantly.
Bedroom cleaning is a whole job with its own pay system, so it has its own page rather than a paragraph here.
The Advert That Could Not Agree With Itself About Its Own Wage
A guest porter post at a country house hotel was worth opening twice.
The headline said "£13.50 an hour". Lower down, the same advert said "£13.00 per hour", and then "£13 per hour plus tips".
Three figures, one job, one page. No sum has been done and none should be. We cannot tell you which one you would be paid.
It is not in the table above, and the fix is easy. Ask for the rate in writing before you accept, and ask which of the advert’s numbers it is.
Why Tips and Service Charge Are Never the Number You Judge
The Dubai waiting role advertised "AED4,500 – AED5,000 a month", and separately promised "Competitive salary plus service charge".
Notice that the advert itself keeps them apart. The salary is a number. The service charge is a word.
A Highland hotel restaurant did the same thing in reverse, printing "Hourly rate of pay £13.00 per hour plus *Earn up to £3000" with an asterisk and no explanation attached.
We printed the hourly rate and left the rest alone. An open-ended extra with no floor is not pay you can plan around.
Service charge and gratuities are not salary. They change with occupancy, with the season and with how the pot is split. Judge the offer on the contracted rate alone. If that rate does not work, tips will not rescue it.
The Ladder Nobody Draws for You, and Where It Starts
Hotels are unusual in low-wage work: moving between departments is the normal way up, not an exception.
A porter who knows every room number, every regular and every supplier is halfway to the front desk already. A receptionist who has covered nights is halfway to duty manager.
None of it is automatic. It happens because you asked, and because you were in the building when a gap opened.
So take the department with the widest set of neighbours. Porters and food and beverage touch everything. A spa desk touches almost nothing.
A Lender Looks at Your Year and Sees a Hole in It
Seasonal hotel work pays well in season and nothing out of it. A bank reading twelve months of statements does not see a good summer. It sees a dead quarter.
Live-in work makes it worse, because your address belongs to your employer and changes when the job does. Open the salary account early and keep it when you move on.
| BEFORE YOU BORROW | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Can you show a full twelve months | A season is not a year of income |
| Whose address is on the account | Staff housing is a temporary address |
| Does the instalment survive the off season | Repayments do not pause when you do |
The Season Is Written Into the Benefits, Not Just the Contract
The island employer above described one of its roles as "Seasonal, starting October 2026, with the potential to become permanent", at "45-52 hours per week, with 2 days off".
Then came the line worth reading twice: "Accommodation and all meals provided (meals March-October)".
The room is all year. The food is eight months. Nobody explains that at the interview because it is in brackets.
A Dubai listing made the same point from the other end, advertising a waiting role as a "Riyadh Season/ 6 months contract". The season is not a mood. It is the length of the job.
When Your Employer Is Also Your Landlord
Live-in hotel work ties the room to the job. One Dubai advert offered "Hotel accommodation and/or transportation (as per policy)" — note the and/or, which means one of them, chosen by them.
Tied housing is genuinely cheap. It is also the reason people stay in bad jobs, because handing in notice means finding a flat in the same week.
| ASK BEFORE YOU MOVE IN | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Is rent deducted, and how much | Free and subsidised are different words |
| How many days to leave after the job ends | Notice and eviction can be the same date |
| Shared or single, and with whom | You cannot pick your flatmates here |
In nine Irish hotel adverts read for this article, every mention of accommodation was a discount on guest rooms, not a place to live. A discounted stay is a perk. Staff housing is a home. Ask which one is meant.
City Hotel or Seaside Resort, Settled Honestly
If this is your first hotel job and you can move, take the season. You will learn three departments in six months, because nobody else can cover them.
If you need a settled year, a lease or a loan, take the city hotel even at the same rate. Continuous employment beats a summer.
The Insurance Policy That Decides Who Gets Hired
Hotel work is unusual because you handle guests’ cars, bags and belongings. One porter and concierge advert required a full clean driving licence and set a minimum age of 25, giving insurance for chauffeuring as the reason.
So the insurer, not the manager, wrote part of that job description. Ask what covers you when something of a guest’s is damaged on your shift.
| ASK AT INTERVIEW | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Who is liable for a guest’s car or bag | It should never be your wages |
| Does medical cover end with the season | Seasonal contracts stop, injuries do not |
| Are you covered in every department | Covering a shift can move the risk |
What Travels to the Next Hotel, and What Stays Behind
The craft travels beautifully. Check in and check out, table service, complaint handling and the rhythm of a busy morning are the same everywhere.
Your department history travels too, and it is the most valuable thing you own. Two years of front office reads the same on paper anywhere.
What stays behind is the building. Your regulars, your shortcuts, your standing with the duty manager and your place in the rota are worth nothing next door.
So move for a department, not a small rise. A sideways step into a bigger department beats a better rate in the same one.
Seasonal and live-in hiring runs on urgency, which is what fraud needs. Nobody should charge you for a hotel job, a uniform, a placement or a room deposit. Real employers put the address, the rate and the accommodation terms in writing first.
Eight Questions People Keep Asking About Hotel Work
Which hotel department is easiest to get into with no experience?
Usually porters and food and beverage service. Both take people with no history, and both sit next to more departments than any other, which makes moving up realistic.
Does front of house pay more than back of house?
Not reliably. One island employer read here advertised its front office reservationist at from 13.00 pounds an hour and its maintenance and cleaning roles at from 13.50.
Can you move between hotel departments?
Yes, and it is the normal way up in this trade. A porter moving to reception and then to duty manager is an ordinary career, not a lucky one.
Are tips and service charge part of a hotel salary?
No. Judge an offer on the contracted rate alone. Service charge changes with occupancy and season, and adverts often mention it without a figure.
What does hotel work pay?
It depends on the country and the department. Adverts read here ran from 9,000 to 12,000 rupees a month in India to 4,500 to 5,000 dirhams a month in Dubai.
What is a seasonal hotel contract?
A job that runs for one trading season and then ends. One advert read here was seasonal from October 2026 with the potential to become permanent, and its meals ran only March to October.
Is live-in hotel accommodation a good idea?
It is cheap and convenient. It also means your employer is your landlord, so leaving the job can mean leaving the room the same week. Ask how many days you get.
Does accommodation in a hotel advert mean staff housing?
Often not. In many adverts it means a discount on guest rooms for you and your family. Check which is meant before planning a move.
