|Confidence flag on every row
|No hourly rate invented from a room rate
|No invented numbers
Two room attendants take jobs in the same town, on the same hourly rate, in the same week.
One is given twelve rooms a shift and finishes on time. The other is given eighteen and stays late, unpaid, twice a week.
Same advert, near enough. Same money on paper. One of them will last a year and the other will not.
The Number That Decides Your Wage Is Never Printed in the Advert
Every other job in this cluster is measured in hours. Housekeeping is measured in rooms.
The rate tells you what an hour is worth. The quota tells you how much work is packed into that hour, and it is what actually sets your wage.
Learn to ask for it before you sign, and you can price any housekeeping offer on earth in about a minute.
Four Different Jobs Are Hiding Behind One Word
Housekeeping is a department, not a job. The roles inside it are counted in different ways.
| ROLE | WHAT YOU ACTUALLY DO | HOW YOU ARE MEASURED |
|---|---|---|
| Room attendant | Strip, clean and reset bedrooms and bathrooms | Rooms finished per shift |
| Public area cleaner | Lobby, corridors, lifts, toilets, the gym | Areas covered, and the clock |
| Linen and laundry | Wash, press, sort, stock the floor cupboards | Volume, and whether the floors ran dry |
| Turndown attendant | Evening reset of occupied rooms only | Rooms, but a much larger number of them |
| Floor supervisor | Check finished rooms, release them to reception | Rooms checked, and rooms sent back |
| Head housekeeper | Set the quotas, the rota and the linen budget | Cost per room, and guest complaints |
Room attendant and public area are the two genuine entry points. Linen is the quietest door and the one people overlook.
One Advert Admitted the Quota Exists and Would Not Name It
A country house hotel advertised a room attendant post in September 2026. Its duty line is worth reading slowly.
"As a Room Attendant, you will be responsible for maintaining a number of rooms per day."
A number. Not twelve, not sixteen. The advert confirms a quota exists and then declines to say what it is.
Its pay was published as £26,436.80 a year for "40 hours per week (5 days out of 7 per week)". Both figures are real and neither tells you the workload.
That is the whole problem in one advert. You are told the money and the hours, and the thing sitting between them is left blank.
Ask two questions before you accept: how many rooms in a standard shift, and what happens on a day you do not finish them. If the answer stays vague, that is your answer. A quota nobody will write down is a quota that moves.
What Housekeeping Actually Pays in Four Currencies
There is no global housekeeping wage. Anything printing one has averaged a Dubai beach resort with a roadside inn.
Real advertised figures, each left in its own currency.
The Gulf row is the starkest blank this project has produced. Sixteen Dubai adverts and sixteen Saudi ones, all genuinely hotel housekeeping, and not one printed pay.
One Dubai employer alone had nine live adverts and priced none.
The yearly UK figure deserves a note too. It is published as a salary, so no hourly equivalent appears here. Dividing it would invent a number the employer never wrote.
One large salary site gives a UK room attendant £13.28 an hour from "3.2k salaries reported", updated 31 August 2026, in a band of £12.71 to £15.21.
The heading and the unit both check out, which is rarer than it sounds. Its real weakness is different: an hourly average cannot tell you how many rooms were inside that hour.
The Jobs Sitting on Either Side of This One
Housekeepers move between these more than any other group in hotels.
Two Jobs, One Hotel, One Rate, and Only One Is Counted
A Highland hotel was advertising two roles at once. Same building, same payroll, same week.
The porter was "£12.71 an hour". The room attendant was "£12.71 per hour guaranteed 21 hours = 3 days per week".
Identical money. Then the difference: nobody counts a porter’s bags, and somebody counts the attendant’s rooms.
Two jobs can share a rate and still be nothing alike. One has a target and one does not, and the target is invisible on the advert.
Why Checkout Day Turns One Shift Into Another
A room that is staying occupied takes a fraction of the time a room that has been vacated takes.
So a shift of eighteen stayovers and a shift of eighteen checkouts are not the same shift, and the quota usually does not distinguish between them.
A Maastricht hotel showed the boundary moving in writing. Its public area cleaner’s duties included "Eventuele kamers bij late check-outs" — any rooms, when checkouts run late.
Ask what your quota looks like on a heavy checkout day. That is the day the job is really testing you.
The Name on Your Payslip Is Rarely the Name Over the Door
Big hotel groups are famous names, but a large share of housekeeping is outsourced. One UK contractor was advertising six roles at once inside four separately branded hotels. In the Netherlands, most housekeeping adverts read came from contractors, not hotels.
It matters because the quota is then set by a company the guests never see, under a service contract you will never be shown or allowed to read.
| ASK AT INTERVIEW | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Whose name is on the contract | The hotel brand may not employ you |
| Who sets the room quota | Often the contractor, not the hotel |
| What happens if the contract is lost | Your employer can change without you moving |
One Hotel Advertised Two Rates for the Same Floors
The Maastricht hotel above was hiring cleaners twice over, in two different ways.
Hiring directly, it published "Salaris van €14,99 per uur". Through a facilities contractor, the same hotel’s cleaning work was advertised at "Bruto uurloon vanaf €15,52".
Two employers, one building, two rates, both live in the same week. No sum has been done here and none should be.
The lesson is not which is better. It is that the hotel’s name on the advert tells you nothing about the terms behind it.
One UK contractor advertised room attendants at 10.85 to 13.50 pounds an hour, and elsewhere said its pay follows the national minimum wage and "may vary based on age". So that spread may be an age band, not a reward for skill.
Per Hour or Per Room, Settled Honestly
Take the hourly job unless you already know the hotel. Per-room pay rewards experience, and you cannot judge the rate until you know how hard its rooms are.
If you do take per-room work, ask for the rate and a typical shift count together. One without the other is not an offer you can price.
The Injury That Takes Three Years to Arrive
One room attendant advert listed "pushing, pulling and lifting, as well as kneeling and long periods of standing". Repeat all of that across a full quota, every shift, and the harm arrives slowly rather than suddenly.
There is no accident form for a back that gave out over three years. That is exactly the kind of claim insurers argue hardest about, so start building your paper trail in week one.
| DO THIS FROM WEEK ONE | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Report every strain, however small | A gradual injury needs dated records |
| Check sick pay from day one | Contractors and hotels differ sharply |
| Ask who lifts the mattresses | Turning beds alone is how backs go |
Deep Clean and Turndown Are Timed Apart, and Nobody Tells You
A turndown round and a deep clean both involve rooms, and a hotel treats them as different currencies.
Turndown is quick and repetitive, so an evening attendant covers far more rooms than a morning one. Deep cleans are slow and usually sit outside the normal count.
The trouble starts when they are not. A deep clean dropped into an ordinary quota eats an hour and the count does not move.
Only one advert read for this article printed an actual room number. A London hotel’s floor supervisor post described "approximately 50 rooms per shift" — a floor to check, not a floor to clean.
The Only Hours Figure a Lender Should Ever See
One hotel advertised "guaranteed 21 hours = 3 days per week". In a busy month you may well work far more than that. Only the 21 are promised, and occupancy decides everything above them.
Borrow against your busiest months and one quiet autumn is enough to break the repayment. One contractor also paid "every two weeks", a cycle that never quite lines up with monthly bills.
| BEFORE YOU BORROW | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Size it on guaranteed hours only | Offered hours are not promised hours |
| Check the pay cycle first | Fortnightly pay and monthly bills drift |
| Keep one quiet month in reserve | Occupancy falls, instalments do not |
What Travels to the Next Hotel, and What Stays Behind
The craft travels completely. Stripping and resetting a room to standard is the same everywhere, and speed built in one hotel works in the next.
Your speed is the asset. A housekeeper who reliably hits a quota is wanted everywhere, and that is worth more than any certificate in this trade.
What stays behind is the quota itself. Your old hotel’s count means nothing at the new one, because room size, layout and standards all differ.
So never assume the number will be similar. Ask again, every time, as if you had never done the job.
Housekeeping hires fast and in volume, which is what fraud needs. Nobody should charge you for a cleaning job, a uniform or a trial shift. A trial shift is work, and work is paid. Get the rate and the site address in writing first.
Eight Questions People Keep Asking About Housekeeping Work
How many rooms does a hotel housekeeper clean in a shift?
It varies by hotel and nobody publishes it. Adverts read for this article named a quota without giving the number. Ask for it before you accept.
Is hotel housekeeping paid per hour or per room?
Both exist. Every priced advert read here gave an hourly or yearly rate, but the workload behind it is counted in rooms, so the quota sets what you really earn.
What does a hotel room attendant earn?
It depends entirely on the country. Adverts read here ran from 13,000 to 20,000 rupees a month in Goa to 12.71 pounds an hour in the Scottish Highlands.
Why do housekeeping adverts hide the room quota?
Because it changes. It moves with occupancy, with staffing and with how many guests checked out, and a published number would become a promise the hotel could not keep.
What happens if I do not finish my rooms?
That is the question to ask at interview. In some hotels you stay until they are done. Find out whether that time is paid.
Is public area cleaning easier than being a room attendant?
It is usually less pressured because it is measured by area and clock rather than a room count. One contractor advertised both roles at one site on the same pay band.
Does housekeeping pay include tips?
Treat tips and service charge as separate from salary, because adverts do. Judge any offer on the contracted rate alone and let anything else be a bonus.
Do hotels employ their housekeepers directly?
Often not. Many housekeeping adverts are placed by outsourcing contractors working inside branded hotels, so check whose name is on your contract.
